- ‘Cool Lah – Tambahlah Bintang!’ Campaign is a collaborative initiative led by EcoKnights in partnership with United for Efficiency (U4E) under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
- Its aim is to raise public awareness about energy-efficient air conditioners and the new Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for residential air conditioners (RAC) that promote more environmentally responsible cooling technologies.
What is the new MEPS for RAC?
Starting in 2026, Malaysia will adopt a new metric for evaluating air conditioner energy performance — the Cooling Seasonal Performance Factor (CSPF) — replacing the older Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) standard.
How does it save energy?
Under the new system, only air conditioner models that achieve a minimum 2-star CSPF rating will be permitted for sale in the Malaysian market.
Newer models meeting this standard are expected to consume 15–25% less energy than older models rated under the EER system.
As a result, a 2-star CSPF unit can be more energy-efficient than an older 3-star EER unit.
The Cool-Lah Challenge is an online competition held under the “Cool-Lah: Add More Stars!” Campaign, organised by MELP and EcoKnights supported by the Ministry of Education and United Nations Environment Programme – United for Efficiency (U4E).
The objective of this competition is to raise awareness among secondary school students about the importance of energy-efficient air conditioner usage.

Myth VS Fact
Myth:
“Turning the air conditioner on and off frequently saves electricity.”
Fact:
Frequently switching the air conditioner off and on actually consumes more energy than keeping it running at a slightly higher temperature.
