Happy World Environment Day! Here’s a fun and easy way you can start on that eco-friendly lifestyle to further take care of our environment – composting!
Composting is an easy, sustainable way of upcycling your organic waste to contribute back to mother nature. Composting can be done anywhere as long as you have your bin, organic waste and a patch of land, no matter where you are!
The benefits of composting include the reduction of waste going into the landfills, and the contribution to the circular economy as the compost can be used as fertilizers to grow your plants and herbs!
Here are three useful tips you can take to kickstart that composting adventure!
Tip 1: Be sure to mix grass clippings with the “brown” materials such as dead leaves, hay, wood chips and shredded newspaper that add carbon. Carbon is the fuel for microbes while nitrogen from grass provides raw elements for protein building.
Tip 2: Do you know? Composting bacteria work best under neutral to acidic conditions, within pH range of 5.5 to 8. If your compost is too acidic, adding ash may help to neutralize it, while pine needles and oak leaves can help to reduce the alkalinity of your compost.
Tip 3: The more you add to your pile at one time, the more it will heat up. In other words, adding one big ‘meal’ to your pile is better than dividing it into several smaller ‘snacks’, as more heat will help the microbes to turn your wastes into compost faster.
There you go! We wish you all the best in your composting endeavor!
And that’s not all, here’s a good news! EcoKnights will be conducting an online workshop on composting this soon, so look out for further details! Come and join us in paving the way towards a more sustainable future!
