29 November, Kuala Lumpur – On 13th October, EcoKnights team and Starbucks staff have visited the Taman Ikan Emas Edible Garden once again for their monthly maintenance with the local residents. The maintenance started with weeding and removal of sick plants, followed by applying used coffee grounds as organic fertilizer provided by Starbucks.
Used coffee grounds are good for gardening as it adds organic material to the soil, thus improving the drainage, water retention, and aeration of the soil. Used coffee grounds also attracts earthworms and sustains microorganisms that are beneficial to the plants.
Other than the garden maintenance, EcoKnights team members also conducted a mudball-making workshop for all the attendees. The attendees were then given some pre-made mudballs to throw into the Sungai Kerayong next to the garden. The mudballs are important to rivers as they will adhere to the chemical compounds in the water and make the rivers clear again.
The Saturday’s community engagement under the River of Life ended with the local residents happily sharing some of their harvests with EcoKnights members and Starbucks staff.
