On the 11th and 19th of January 2020, EcoKnights conducted two soap-making workshops together with 26 students and 30 participants from USCI university and the local community in PPR Sri Alam respectively, aiming to reduce water pollution resulting from poor management of used cooking oil (UCO).
All participants were briefed with detrimental facts about UCO and the main goal of this workshop. Interestingly, most of them were not aware of the seriousness of disposing UCO into the drainage system, that takes millions of ringgits to repair and clean clogged-up pipes resulting from UCO coagulation. After learning about the objective of the workshop, the participants were thrilled to make their very own soap out of UCO.
This workshop is so simple and fun that most of the students from UCSI decided to make an extra batch of soap from the remaining UCO. Not only did the workshop bring joy to the community, it also strengthened the bond between families and friends as the soap making process requires teamwork.
In short, conducting a short and simple workshop plays a vital role in delivering awareness about our environmental issue. We hope that such knowledge can be well incorporated in their daily life and passed on to the younger generation in the near future, as small changes result in bigger impacts.
