In the spirit of volunteerism, over 250 HSBC volunteers joined two clean up projects with EcoKnights in September in conjunction with World Clean Up Day under the HSBC Volunteering Program.
5th September 2018, Kuala Lumpur – The EcoKnights team hosted a Log-Boom Clean Up with 40 volunteers from HSBC Electronic Data Processing Sdn Bhd at Kerayong River at PPR Seri Alam, Kuala Lumpur. The day started off with a briefing for volunteers on the clean up mechanism, which begins with collection followed by segregation and weighing. The volunteers also separated the trash according to plastic, paper, metal, textile, organic waste and miscellaneous. Ms. Fong from ERE Consultant Group further explained to the group on the Phase 3A, River of Life Public Outreach Programme (ROL-POP) efforts to educate the public about taking care of our rivers. This activity is one of the efforts to give a first-hand experience to the volunteers on the common trash that makes its way into our rivers, due to irresponsible dumping. The volunteers managed to collect 172 Kg of waste within a time span of 2 hours. The amount of rubbish collected is a reflection for local communities on how our rivers – a foundation of any civilisation, are being treated as a dumping ground.
19th September, Bagan Lalang – On the 15th of September, EcoKnights hosted their very first beach clean up with 220 volunteers from HSBC at Bagan Lalang Beach, Sepang. The clean up site is a 600-meter beach where the volunteers collected the trash and segregated it according to the following categories – plastic, paper, metal, organic waste, cigarette butts, polystyrene, textile, glass and miscellaneous. At the end of the day the volunteers managed to collect 324 Kg of trash. The program ended with a sharing session from our EcoKnights Education Officer, Nabila about living a zero-waste lifestyle, in which she emphasized on the importance of individual roles in waste management.
