6th February 2020, Kuala Lumpur – Green Thaipusam is an environmental awareness campaign hosted by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) in collaboration with Jabatan Kesihatan dan Alam Sekitar, SWCorp, Alam Flora Sdn. Bhd., Global Environment Centre (GEC) and ERE Consulting Group Sdn. Bhd. EcoKnights, under the River of Life (ROL) project, sent 22 volunteers for the Green Thaipusam event in conjunction with the Thaipusam Festival at Jalan Leboh Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.
The main objectives of Green Thaipusam are to encourage the public to reduce waste especially food waste and to practice sustainable consumption such as reducing the usage of single-use plastic. The volunteers held placards along the road of Jalan Leboh Ampang with different environmental-related messages to share the main objectives of the programme. Aside from that, the volunteers got to experience the Hindu culture during the chariot procession on the night of the Thaipusam festival too.
As the highlight of this programme, the volunteers were assigned to collect broken coconut husks that were used during the prayer ritual performed by the Hindu devotees along the road. The collected coconut husks will be turned into various byproducts.
