On the 15th of December 2023, the Theatrette at Tenaga Switchgear was bustling with creativity and greenery as employees gathered for a unique and engaging workshop centered around the Japanese art of Kokedama. This innovative workshop, organized as part of the Sustainable Living Awareness Programme, aimed to combine education, hands-on experience, and a touch of nature’s beauty.
Before the workshop began, the participants were introduced to one of Ecoknights’ flagship programmes called Old Soles New Life or OSNL for short. Programme Director at Ecoknights gave a short talk on the history of the program along with what it aims to achieve. The Tenaga SwitchGear employees listened intently to the presentation, equipped with the knowledge of shoe recycling and the incentive to recycle their old shoes. This initiative was started to prevent shoes from ending up in landfills, as there is no recycling or waste management system for these shoes. After the talk, the participants were briefed with a demo on Kokedama by our Ecoknights facilitators
Kokedama, a Japanese gardening technique, involves crafting ornamental balls made of soil and cocopeat. Participants had the opportunity to create their own Kokedama, instilling each creation with their personal touch and creativity. The process involved wrapping plant roots in a mixture of soil and cocopeat, forming a ball, and decorating it with vibrant Fittonia plants. The ball was held together through skillfully tied strings.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Kokedama offers a fresh and organic way to showcase indoor plants. Its versatility allows it to be displayed as a hanging bonsai or placed elegantly on a dish. This workshop not only provided a platform for employees to explore their creative side but also emphasized the significance of sustainable living. Therefore, through these workshops, Tenaga Switchgear demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.
