Khairi Bin Selamat, Director of the River Basin Management of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, with the attendance of notable guests; EcoKnights Programme Director, Fadly Bakhtiar, Director of Environmental Department Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Encik Azlan Bin Haji Ahmad and a number of representatives from schools.
“Each one of us has a role to play in taking care of our rivers. We should sustain our sources because rivers are a crucial element that contributes to vitality within the cycle of environment as it is the main source of life”, said Tuan Haji Md. Khairi Bin Selamat in his opening speech.
This point of view meets the aim of this competition which is to spark interest and inspire the community, specifically students, teachers, school authorities and the governmental bodies on the importance of rivers around us. Without care and concern for rivers, there will be no widespread awareness and solutions, particularly pertaining to the Klang River.
As one of the initiatives under River of Life, the goal of Anugerah Hijau is to enhance environmental awareness and spark interest in participation among school students, particularly on activities related to river conservation and rehabilitation. The theme this year is ‘Creative Generation for The Klang River’ with two main categories; (1) primary and (2) secondary school students. The competition calls for submission of 3D arts & crafts and poems (sajak) for primary and secondary students respectively.
For primary school students, the two main categories are “Little Lion Eco Champ” and “Big Bear Eco Champ”, whereas the two main categories for secondary school students are “Young Minds” and “Eco Friends”. The prizes that can be won in total are up to RM7,400.00 for primary school category and RM11,200 for secondary school category respectively.
“It is our hope that this year’s Anugerah Hijau will be a big success, furthermore, can develop more awareness among society about the rivers’ importance because without nature, there is no life,” chimed Fadly Bakhtiar during his opening speech.
