25th & 26th July 2019 – EcoKnights carried out two River Explorer programmes with nearly 60 students from Taylor’s International School (10 to 12 years old), together with their teacher at Taman Warisan, Taman Melawati.

The students from Taylor’s International School were given an opportunity to experience being a Junior River Ranger or young scientist by learning, exploring and experimenting with the quality of the river. This was done through the use of three methods of monitoring, which are the physical, chemical and biological criterias. The EcoKnights team made sure the participants understood the importance of each monitoring method to get the best results from the river, while teaching the students simple steps to prevent the pollution of rivers, such as picking up rubbish if they ever see any and saying “NO” to those who throw rubbish into the river. Despite a last-minute change in location due to the heavy rain the night before, EcoKnights team was able to adapt to the situation and explained the important roles that rivers play in everyone’s daily lives, and the students enjoyed the experience at the end of the day. 

Exposing children to the condition of our rivers can affect them in a big way, not only by learning the science behind rivers in classrooms but also experiencing nature through hands-on activities.
