Our First Tree for Us (T4Us) Planting and Giveaway of the Year Concludes, Supported by Davines

On Saturday, 18th of March 2022, we held our first Tree For Us (T4Us) planting and giveaway event of the year. A total of 15 volunteers from Davines and the general public worked together to plant 30 precious mangrove saplings in Sijangkang Mangrove Recreational Park, Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor, as their forever home. This program is part of our ongoing commitment to the Malaysian Greening Programme: 100 Million Tree Planting campaign. Also, Sijangkang Park is a self-driven initiative to restore and maintain the park by the senior community from Kampung Sijangkang. Thus, this particular engagement is significant for the community because it highlights our support for them to continue the good environmental initiative.
The day began with participants arriving to register for the program, which was followed by a briefing by Encik Fazrin from the Sijangkang operation team. The briefing detailed the planting process, including how to handle mangrove saplings with greater care and diligence, as well as the mangrove growth process. He also mentioned that the mangrove saplings that will be planted are about 5-6 months old and were previously grown in the Sijangkang Park nursery. The participants, outfitted with boots, gloves, and hoes, marched candidly into the entrance.
Before the fun part begins, Sijangkang Mangrove Ranger, practically demonstrated the planting process — how to take off the polybag and dig hole process. Finally, it’s planting time! With a total of 30 saplings to be planted, the participants were divided into tasks whereby some of them dig the holes and the remaining planted the mangrove saplings.
To bluntly put, the participants did the hard work, as the soil was quite hard and clayey, making it difficult to dig it up. Because of its capacity to retain more water and nutrients than sandy soil, the soil textures of mangroves explained a high silt and clay percentage, which is considered high and optimal organic material for tree growth. Nonetheless, it was a memorable and thrilling experience for the majority of them because it was their first time doing it. At the end of the day, the participants took a self-tour of Sijangkang Mangrove Park, walking through all of the pathways and enjoying the ecosystem, which includes not only mangrove trees but also various types of fauna.
