10th May – 24th May 2019, Subang Jaya – Ramadan is a holy month that helps Muslims to focus a great deal on reflection, spiritual re-focusing and self-improvement. It is a great point of time to reflect on our deeds and start practising a greener lifestyle. EcoKnights conducted Green Ramadan Campaign (GRC) alongside ERE Consulting Group and River of Life team throughout 16 days at two locations, Jalan Raja Alang and Jalan Raja Uda, which are both located at Kampong Baru, Kuala Lumpur. For this third year of GRC, the initiative went on for 15 days starting from 10th May to 24th May 2019 with the main objective to encourage Malaysians to move away from the practice of using plastic bags and an opportunity for Malaysians to use more sustainable and environmentally-friendly options. EcoKnights hopes to raise the ecological consciousness of Malaysians as well as empower them to adopt and embrace a sustainable lifestyle, by way of saying NO to plastic and managing used cooking oil in a proper way.

Throughout the fifteen-day event, EcoKnights distributed the containers and reusable bags with the tagline “AKU TAK NAK PLASTIK” to raise the awareness level of the people who come for food-hunting at the bazaar during the month of Ramadan. Other than that, another one of the main objectives of the programme is to educate and train bazaar vendors to play their part in reducing the disposal of used cooking oil into landfills, drains and rivers, as otherwise our environment will end up being terribly polluted. During this period of time, 11 vendors had participated in the campaign by giving their used cooking oil to EcoKnights, amounting to a total of 260 litres of used cooking oil that were collected from the bazaar. These oil will be repurposed into soaps and biodiesel by respective parties.

At the closing of the campaign, Maya Karin, the River of Life ambassador, was invited to join the team in distributing the bags and carrying out a short ‘buka puasa’ session with her fans, officers from the local authority, and media on the 31st May.

Overall, the GRC event was a success, whereby 2,500 bags and containers were distributed during the campaign, with the help of 15 volunteers. In addition to the distribution, lucky draws were carried out to further advance the campaign by encouraging all visitors to use the given items when they purchase food at the Bazaar. 300 Bazaar visitors were actively involved in this campaign as they joined the lucky draws and even brought their own reusable bags, food containers and tumblers to pack their takeaways. In total, between 3,100 – 3,600 single-use plastics were successfully refused throughout the campaign.

Volunteers and EcoKnights team explaining the mechanism of the campaign to the visitors at bazaar

GRC team with the lucky draw participant

The vendors were encouraged to keep their used cooking oil in returns of new cooking oil

Some of the volunteers during Green Ramadan Campaign

Maya Karin interacting with media and fans during the event

Category: News Published: Monday, 17 June 2019 12:04 by Ainul Mardziyyah 10th May – 24th May 2019, Subang Jaya – Ramadan is a holy month that helps Muslims to focus a great deal on reflection, spiritual re-focusing and self-improvement.
