September 18th, 2015 Kuala Lumpur – SBC Group, together with NGO, EcoKnights have embarked on a place making effort together through the installation of edible community sky gardens in the Kiara East Dex condominiums.
In the process of making spaces for the edible gardens, the gardens are also designed to create social spaces for the condominium blocks and the residents.
TL Sia, SBC Group’s Chief Operating Officer says, "With rapid urbanisation and environmental concerns, Malaysians are becoming more eco-conscious and seek homes which can achieve energy and cost savings while benefit the environment at the same time. At Kiara East, we are committed to setting benchmarks for a desirable live-work-play-learn in an integrated township with a vibrant and eco-conscious community."
“The edible community gardens which we worked together on with EcoKnights will feature local species of edible herbs and fruits from bird’s eye chili, pandan leaves, or even vegetables, which are grown in an aquaponics system. The aquaponics system will allow vegetables like amaranth and spinach to grow freely to be harvested by the residents. And we hope that the new residents of Dex Suites will enjoy the free access and usage of these edible plants and fish,” added Sia.
“This is part of SBC Group’s effort towards facilitating a fresh community. In addition, we hope that these gardens will serve the needs of the residents and thus, if you need to use these herbs and fish, the residents can obtain it from within the condominiums, minimizing the need to drive over distances to obtain these herbs from supermarkets. This also go some way towards belong people realize that they too can do their bit towards reducing the impact of one’s own carbon footprint,” elaborated Sia.
“The gardens are not just open spaces. The kind of plant species grown are all edible. Whether lemongrass or curry leaves, kaffir lime to pomelo, the SBC edible gardens offer the residents a free source of herbs and fruits. In addition, the gardens are also islands of shades,” says Yasmin Rasyid, president of EcoKnights who supervised the design and installation of the gardens.
The Dex condominiums consist of 593 stylishly designed units in few sizes, offering practical spaces that are designed to provide maximum natural light. The edible community gardens are installed in sky balconies of the condominiums. Committed to providing good quality community space, Dex Condominiums also has several other efficient or “green” initiatives, such as rainwater harvesting and pedestrian train connection. Community spaces are perhaps the most distinctive legacy of the Dex Suites DNA; where the development marry efficient compact living space with Marcadia, the multi-use outdoor “market-arcade” community space. Marcadia is a village square in the heart of Kiara East featuring a food arcade, retail spaces, an artist’s circle as well as a bazaar area.
Dex Suites condominium is part of the Kiara 20-acre integrated development of villas, condo-styled suites, lofts and F&B retail, all connected via walk ways. Planned as a multi-generational scheme, suitable for both the young and old, with plenty of open spaces to meet, such as the park, lake or our town square Marcadia, this development is also connected with a train station and via Jalan Kuching to Duke, NKVE and MRR2 expressways.
