27th August 2018, Kuala Lumpur – In conjunction with the upcoming International World Rivers Day 2018 celebration, the Sungai Bunus Action Group, a community volunteer-based group, a partner of the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) Local Agenda 21 (LA21KL), will be organizing the inaugural Bunus Fun Walk 4 River on Sunday, September 29th. from 7.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.
EcoKnights, a local nonprofit environmental NGO and also a member of the Sungai Bunus Action Group, is taking the lead in organizing the Bunus Fun Walk 4 River, which involves a fun walk of 3.5 km around the Bunus River Retention Pond to symbolize the distance marginalized communities would have to walk in order to have access to clean river water. Apart from the fun walk, the public will also have the opportunity to participate in restoration activities, educational workshops and activities.
Chairman of the Sungai Bunus Action Group, Yasmin Rasyid said, “We are now calling out for partnerships from corporate organizations to support the Fun Walk through various sponsorship packages. The Fun Walk will cater to 1000 participants and apart from members of the public, we are hopeful that the business community will also join us in this effort and benefit their employees in terms of awareness, and engagement.”
“The Bunus Fun Walk 4 River is also a fundraising program where we aim to raise at least RM15, 000 to help the group scale-up and enhance the existing community urban farms that exist in several areas along the 9 km Bunus River,” added Yasmin.

About the Sungai Bunus Action Group
The Sungai Bunus Action Group was established in 2015 and is a partner of Local Agenda 21 of the Kuala Lumpur City Council. The Group comprises of community stakeholders such as residents associations, universities, public schools, businesses, government agencies and also NGOs. The Group meets regularly with the Kuala Lumpur City Council with the aim of advocating for better governance and management of the Bunus River. The Group also acts as a watchdog for any irresponsible acts that take place along the river. Additionally, the Sungai Bunus Action Group also works with interested partners to rehabilitate parts of the riverbanks into public recreational spaces with high economic value.

World Rivers Day, set for the last Sunday of September, is a global celebration of our rivers. The event strives to increase public awareness of the values of our waterways while also promoting the need for sound river stewardship.
