Pasir Gudang, 11 December 2014

Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (MHB) today implemented its ‘MHB Cares’ community project - a flagship CSR initiative for the Orang Asal Seletar (Indigenous First People) of Kampung Pasir Putih in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

Launched in December 2013, ‘MHB Cares’ is a long-term welfare and capability enhancement programme focused on meeting the need for basic education and healthy/ safe living conditions of the Orang Asal Seletar fishing community of Kampung Pasir Putih. Last year, ‘MHB Cares’ focused on the community’s hygienic living conditions and this year, MHB continues the programme by focusing on their basic nutrition and education.

‘MHB Cares’ is a collaboration between MHB and its local environment NGO partner, EcoKnights with the support of the Johor Bahru District Office and Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA) Negeri Johor. Approximately 70 Orang Asal Seletar children and adults and 50 volunteers from MHB dedicated their time and effort to the CSR activities organised by the Company. As MHB employees are encouraged to be responsible and caring citizens with concern for the well-being of the local community in which MHB operates; staff volunteerism is a leading factor in ensuring the success of MHB’s community projects.

Since September to date, MHB staff volunteers have conducted 20 community activities for the Orang Asal Seletar including basic English, self-motivation, healthy lifestyle awareness and baking classes for the adults. The children focused on fun learning activities such as drawing, painting, singing and creating alphabets using play dough. The activities received positive feedback and solicited even more participation from the Orang Asal Seletar.

Mr Dominique de Soras, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of MHB in his speech said “As Malaysia’s largest oil and gas fabrication player and leading investor/ employer in the southern region, it is our responsibility to help our neighbours co-exist in a safe environment. We are confident ‘MHB Cares’ will be a value-adding initiative to gradually and positively impact the Orang Asal communities in Johor. We will continue to transform and progress and contribute towards nation building, wealth creation and improving the quality of life in Johor”.

En Wan Assim bin Wan Sheikh, Director of Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli Negeri Johor (JAKOA) in his speech encouraged other private sector companies to participate actively in CSR programmes. He hoped that the programme initiated by MHB will motivate the children of Orang Asal Kampung Pasir Putih to diligently attend school to further improve the quality of education for children of the indigenous people.

Note to Editor

On 10 & 11 December 2014, and in conjunction with the ‘MHB Cares’ community programme, MHB and its NGO partner, EcoKnights organised a ‘MHB Knights of Nature’ Sustainability Camp. Exclusive to MHB employees’ family members and youths residing or studying in Johor, the sustainability camp aims to educate and encourage young adults on volunteerism and to take an active role in community care and welfare development projects. The sustainability camp also provides exposure for its young participants to step up their level of environmental responsibility and to develop living skills such as leadership, teamwork, time management and problem solving.
