KUALA LUMPUR, 10 August 2018 – In partnership with EcoKnights, Vanke Holdings (M) Sdn Bhd today launched a tree planting initiative in support of the national River of Life (ROL) project.
Vanke is committing to the planting of 100 fruit tree saplings in various locations along Sungai Kerayong, which is currently listed under Phase 3A of the River of Life implementation program. The trees are planted to provide soil stability along degraded river banks, and aims to rejuvenate urban biodiversity. Each tree planting activity will be accompanied by mud ball throwing in to the river as a catalyst to tackle murkiness of Sungai Kerayong. All the trees will be planted in phases, in which each tree planting phase would see Vanke collaborating and partnering with various groups of volunteers and community members such as riverine communities, schools, NGOs, government agencies and even private businesses.
The launch also marks the first of many of Vanke’s active social responsibility efforts with local civil society organizations and communities to support river conservation and rehabilitation efforts.
“At Vanke, we are passionate about improving the communities in which we operate, be it through providing excellent housing, enhancing the quality of living or supporting social causes that are close to our hearts. We are delighted to be working together with EcoKnights as we work together to improve the environment of Kuala Lumpur,” said Lang Cong, Managing Director of Vanke Holdings (M) Sdn Bhd.
Environment conservation and sustainability is one of Vanke’s key corporate social responsibility (CSR) pillars, with initiatives ranging from climate change, sustainable urbanisation, green supply chain to wetlands conservation. Apart from its strong credentials and capabilities in sustainable development, Vanke has continuously carried out research on plant diversity conservation in the past five years, focusing on the protection of natural vegetation, endangered plants, as well as the construction of urban ecological gardens.
“We see this social responsibility partnership and collaboration with Vanke is pertinent and important fulfilling our efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goal 11, which is Sustainable Cities and Communities. Over the years, with rapid development, we have witnessed the deterioration of our city rivers. It doesn’t have to be this way where we sacrifice natural ecosystems to meet the needs of development. We are happy that together with Vanke, our values are aligned to created pockets of programs and activities that can contribute towards building a sustainable city, and rivers, while engaging and partnering with various stakeholders such as communities and government agencies”, said Fadly Bakhtiar, the Program Director of EcoKnights.
“We hope this effort, will grow in traction, and attract and encourage the action of other relevant stakeholders to play their part and give back to the city through green initiatives”, added Fadly.
