Bayan Baru, Penang, 9th – 10th September 2017 – Ecoknights team participated in the Penang International Green Carnival (PIGC) at Setia SPICE Arena organized by Penang Green Council (PGC) as a partner. The theme of PIGC this year is ‘Against Climate Change Together (ACCT), Now!’ to increase public’s awareness on the current climate condition and the action to be taken to fight on climate change. About 59 exhibitors from all over Malaysia also participated in sharing information, products and workshops about climate change.
The opening ceremony for PIGC started at 12.00pm with the dance performance by SUK Kebudayaan, followed by a welcoming speech by the General Manager of PGC and Chairman of PGC YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng. As a partner of the PIGC, representative from Ecoknights, Nabila Shohimi received the certificate from chairman of PGC on stage.
As a partner, EcoKnights opened a booth as well as conducted a composting workshop and film screening. Among the booth activities are fun educational games such as ‘Climate Change Puzzle’ and ‘Your Future is Hanging’ to educate the public on the factors and impacts of climate change. Through the games, the public can understand on how the anthropogenic activities caused the increase in greenhouse gases that lead to climate change.
The composting workshop held from 2.30pm-3.30pm on 9th September was an introductory workshop to backyard composting in order to guide the registered participants on the fundamental composting method. Participants were given an empty container to try out the layering method of composting by putting in the orange fruit peels and unused paper or cardboard. Most of the participants were interested to start their own compost and have expressed their interest to obtain compost bins.
The 2-day environmental film screening provided opportunity for the public to watch climate change related films. There were 2 screening sessions:
- 9th September (4pm – 5pm): ‘The Disappearing Hills’ and ‘The Earth’
- 10th September (3pm – 5pm): ‘Voices of Transition’, ‘Global Warming’ and ‘Message in A Bottle’.
A discussion session was carried out among the audience to get an insight of the public on their understanding of the films.
