Aveda commits to raising funds to benefit water conservation
Last year Aveda global network of beauty professional and corporate employees in more than 30 countries passionately pursued our goal of protecting and preserving clean water for everyone, everywhere by organizing thousands of events to raise a total of US$5.5 million for clean water. We also set a Guinness World Record for the Most Money Raised for Charity through Haircuts in a 24 Hour Period during our Global Cut-A-Thon. Other heavy-hitting fund raisers included our Light the Way™ Candles, CatWalk for Water fashion shows contributing to clean water programs. Since 1999 we have raised over US$32M to help support organizations that directly effect environmental change. More than US$26M of that amount has funded clean water projects at home and around the world.
In conjunction with Earth Month 2015 and in support of people’s rights to safe drinking water, once again Aveda Walk for Water campaign was held on 19 April at Central Park, One Utma, Selangor. This year marked the 3rd time this international campaign was held in Malaysia. The 2.5-3 km mass walk was to symbolise the lengths individuals in developing countries have to walk in order to get water supplies for themselves and their families. Close to 500 individuals participated in the walk.
The campaign aimed at raising awareness on water-related issues, specifically on accessibility to clean water and also water safety. The walk was held in support of local NGOs, EcoKnights’s effort to raise funds and awareness among the participants and public on issues related to water accessibility, pollution and water availability in Kampung Pasir Putih, Pasir Gudang, Johar.
In the latest effort of EcoKnights in building sustainable communities in Kampung Pasir Putih, Pasir Gudang, this issue of safe and accessible drinking water is still pertinent and relevant. About 100 indigenous individuals of the Seletar tribe in Kampung Pasir Putih are relyingonirregular supply and unfiltered pipedwater.Their current practices are rather unsustainable and with thelack of support from the relevant authorities, the quality of their current drinking and washing water is doubtful. Many villagers there earn less than RM500 a month and their main economic activityis through fisheries. Now with unreliable sources of drinkingwater, Seletar families and their children are at risk from unsafe drinkingwater.
Yasmin Rasyid, Founder of EcoKnights said, “Many Malaysians aren’t aware that there are many communities out there are living in very deprived situations in terms of water accessibility, availability and quality. While many of us splurge on bottled water and occasionally close an eye on burst water pipes, there is a need to address and help others in dire need of such neglected privileges.” Proceeds collected from Sunday’s walk amounted to more than RM20,000.
EcoKnights is very grateful for the support of Chempaka School, Blu Inc and especially DHL IT Services representative, Giorgio Catucci, for supporting this campaign by engaging as many as 200 DHL staff across business units, to participate and donate to this effort. In addition, Giorgio also initiated a RM1 per banana effort in the DHL office in Cyberjaya where sales and profits from the sales of the banana were channeled to this same campaign.
