NUSAJAYA, June 5, 2015:

In what can be described as a rare occasion, the United States ambassador to Malaysia, Joseph Y. Yun, paid a visit yesterday to Johor — on a bicycle.

He and his delegation was en route to Singapore.

Yun, his wife, Dr Melanie Billings-Yun, and 10 delegates were participating in the #GoGreenLah! cycling expedition from Putrajaya to Singapore.

The delegation took time to visit Sunway Iskandar here to celebrate World Environment Day (WED).

This visit was part of an international effort to create awareness on the importance of the environment.

Sunway Iskandar, which is part of the Sunway Group local property developers, was selected by Yun due to the notable sustainable efforts in its development projects.

This includes the Sunway Resort City, which is the first green township in Malaysia to be awarded the Green Building Index (GBI).

Following this, Sunway Iskandar will also introduce sustainable and green elements into the master plan of Nature’s Capital City.

In his speech, Yun commended Sunway and EcoKnights for the joint effort in supporting sustainable development and promoting environmental awareness.

“This project is a good example of how a responsible developer can benefit both the community and the planet.

“It is fitting that this announcement falls on the eve of World Environment Day, which encourages worldwide awareness and action for the environment,” said Yun.

Meanwhile, Sarena Cheah, Sunway Group managing director of its Property Development Division for Malaysia and Singapore, said the group was honoured to have Yun and the delegates present in Sunway Iskandar.

“Nurturing the community is also one of our key drivers, especially on the environmental front, as we want to ensure a truly liveable city for our residents and visitors.”

The WED celebration also witnessed Sunway Iskandar’s plans to adopt 75,000 trees across the 1,800-acre township as part of its community-driven efforts.

Meanwhile, EcoKnights president Yasmin Rasyid, applauded Sunway Group’s enthusiasm to actively encourage and educate the communities around Malaysia to participate in acts to protect the environment.

“Sunway Iskandar is blessed with many beautiful natural elements and we are excited to be working with Sunway to preserve the rich surroundings.”
