His Royal Highness Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Raja Muda of Selangor, officiated Royal Maritime Environmental Awareness (RMEA)

Port Klang, 8th September 2018

The Royal Maritime Environmental Awareness (RMEA) which is a national holistic program in the preservation, protection and restoration of maritime environment was successfully officiated by His Royal Highness Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at a ceremony full of colours and sound at the Royal Selangor Yacht Club, Port Klang.

According to Capt. Martin Lim, the President & Chairman of Maritime Pilots Malaysia (MPM),  RMEA which is organized by MPM will be an integral part of the Malaysia World Maritime Week hosted by the Ministry of Transport and its agency, Marine Department of Malaysia. RMEA is meticulously structured and conceptualized in accordance to the Bali Declaration signed by the Asia Pacific countries of maritime pilots at Bali, Indonesia on the 30th August 2017, where Malaysia was a signatory country.  

He added that RMEA will not only raise the awareness amongst the public the importance of maritime environment protection, but mitigating solution to counter existing issue through seamless synergy with private companies or organisation including governmental agencies and its ministry.

According to Dato’ Kamarudin Jaafar-Deputy Transport Minister of Malaysia, “Raising the awareness amongst the public, educating the young on the importance of environmental care is, beyond doubt, crucial and fundamental. However, effective solution in rectifying any harmful condition, including enforcement is equally important. These have been the integral framework of the RMEA”

The Ministry of Transport and its agency, Marine Department of Malaysia is committed to render its full support to RMEA in its effort in preserving, protecting and restoring our maritime environment consistently.

Private companies or entities and organizations, including governmental agencies, are duly encouraged to be associate partners of RMEA in order to synergize seamlessly to achieve maritime environmental goals.  We need a cohesive effort to sustain everlasting results for the benefits of our younger generations and health of our earth.

His Royal Highness, Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was given a harbor tour off Port Klang onboard a boat together with other distinguished guests.  During the tour, His Royal Highness Tengku Amir Shah was perplexed and worried over the presence of plastic pollutants that appeared on the sea surface and not least were occupying the stretch of coastlines during low tide. His Royal Highness insisted that immediate action must be taken in addressing the undesirable condition that were surely detrimental to the marine eco system as well as tarnishing the image of Port Klang. He hoped respective local authorities to act immediately to prevent the condition from deteriorating further.

His Royal Highness presented the RMEA Certificate to private companies who had deliberated commitment in the preservation, protection and restoration of maritime environment, which are also associated partners to the Royal Maritime Environmental Awareness (RMEA).

Amongst the guest of honour present during the ceremony was Dato’ Kamarudin Jaafar, Deputy Transport Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Haji Baharin bin Dato Abdul Hamid, Director General Marine Department of Malaysia, Dato’ Richard Curtis, Ex-Commodore of Royal Selangor Yacht Club,  Mr Ian James, Group CEO of MMC Port Holdings, Dato’ Azman Shah bin Mohd Yusof, CEO Northport (Malaysia) Bhd.
