13th August, Kuala Lumpur – On Friday the 10th of August 2018, EcoKnights planted three different tree species together with Vanke Holdings and students from Sekolah Menengah Sains Alam Shah at Taman Halimahton, Kuala Lumpur, along the Klang River. The trees were planted to make the area greener and more attractive for recreational purposes under the River of Life programme.
Among the guests who participated in the initiative programme are Mr. Lang Cong, Managing Director of Vanke Holdings; Pn. Norhidayah bt Abu Hassan from River Basin Management, JPS; Pn. Yasmin Rasyid, EcoKnights’ President and Mr. Steven Ng, Secretary of Taman Halimahton Resident Association.
The different species were planted together with fertiliser to give the trees a good start and coconut husks to protect their roots. The tree species planted were:
- Ceri berbados (malpighia glabra) – rich in Vitamin C
- Kedondong (spondias dulcis) – an antioxidant with low cholesterol levels
- Belimbing buluh (averhhoa bilimbi L.) – its leaves may be used as cooking herbs
After the tree planting session, a mud ball workshop was being held. The EcoKnights team taught the participants from Vanke and the school students on how to make mud balls. Mud balls are made up of sand, organic material and effective microorganisms; an environmentally friendly tool to improve the quality of rivers. The event ended with some good discussions about river caretaking and a delicious lunch to further end an inspiring morning community activity.
