On the 7th June 2017, KDU College University took the initiative to raise environmental awareness on campus in conjunction with the global World Environment Day. For this purpose, over one hundred university students of various disciplines came together to listen to EcoKnights president, Yasmin Rasyid.
Yasmin highlighted the importance of taking care of our environment and illustrated some of the environmental issues our society is currently facing. Besides, she painted a positive perspective on how the environment could look like in the future if we continue our efforts of protecting and saving it, thereby motivating the students to take action.
At the same time on 21st June 2017, EcoKnights Education Officer, Nurul Nabila Shohimi, and two of our interns, Priya and Caroline, ran an up-cycling workshop at KDU University. Nabila briefly introduced up-cycling at the beginning of the session to explain the purpose of this workshop to the students. Up-cycling can be regarded as an alternative to regular recycling, as it offers an opportunity to ensure that resources aren’t wasted while something new builds out of them.
During the workshop, we got our hands dirty and made coasters out of old newspapers and magazines. We also upcycled used old T-Shirts into bags. The students were curious to learn something new, and we really had a lot of fun during the session. Besides, everyone could take their own coaster and bag home afterwards.
