EcoKnights is halfway through the Garbage to Garden (G2G) Composting Program and we are really amazed by the overwhelming amount of participants. Launched in November 2016, this community program is supported by the Shell Sustainable Development Grant, designed to educate and activate Malaysians to reduce their food waste disposal in to landfills by composting.
Despite the closed registration, we have received a great amount of requests from the public either to take part in the program or to purchase the compost bins from us. To date, almost 350 backyard compost bins have been distributed and currently, we are busy with delivering basic composting workshops to communities in the Klang Valley. The distribution of the bins is divided in eight batches of distribution, and we are now left with the eight batch, followed by residential communities of Bukit Jelutong, Kota Kemuning and Bukit Gasing.
Throughout our workshops, we have participants who are not only composting beginners but also the ‘gurus’ who have been doing composting for at least 2 years. The workshops serve as a networking platform as the compost ‘gurus’ shared their experience and tips with the novices who were eager to start composting. Most of them are also active members in online gardening groups, hence it is natural to have these gardening enthusiasts to exchange gardening tips with each other.
All in all, EcoKnights is grateful for the positive support by Shell Sustainable Development Grant and our participants. While in the process of receiving feedbacks from our participants, we are looking forward to write more on the upcoming workshops and progress in the next newsletter. So stay tuned!!
