3rd-5th February 2017, Melaka: LA21 Committee has conducted a retreat camp at Melaka earlier this February. This camp was intended for all River of Life People Outreach Program (ROL-POP) Sungai Bunus stakeholders. President Yasmin Rasyid, also chairman of ROL-POP Sungai Bunus, alongside Amlir Ayat, Vice-President of EcoKnights and an officer, Emirul Redzuan were invited to participate in this camp. Other than EcoKnights, about 30 organization such as DBKL, Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) and residential association were invited. The camp aims to reconstruct an action plan for ROL-POP Sungai Bunus through an example which will be turn into a more concrete framework for future plan.
The retreat starts with a visit at JPS Melaka. This session started with an introduction by JPS Melaka about their restoration on Sungai Melaka. Restoration that have been made in Sungai Melaka has improved the surrounding environments and health of the riverine community.
After the visit, all participants were taken to the Novotel Hotel Melaka to refresh themselves. Later at night, stakeholders proposing their ideas and execution plan for the Sungai Bunus. EcoKnights represent by Emirul Redzuan proposing an official website for ROL-POP Sungai Bunus. The ideas of this website are to provide real-time updates about rehabilitation program on Sungai Bunus, and at the same time providing downloadable materials such as poster or flyers. The website also contains information about the river such as geography, landmarks and history.
On the second day, the stakeholders discussed the vision and mission for the ROL-POP Sungai Bunus. This discussion will be a guiding point for the committee member to decide and come out with better solution. Based on this discussion, four committee group have been established. Each driving committee have specific task to focus on which comprises of infrastructure, community outreach & mobilization, river quality & quantity study, and monitoring & evaluation. By the end of the day, each action group need to discuss a plan that can be use in 2017. They later need to present the outcome on the next day.
On the last day of the retreat, all four action groups were required to present their plan for this year. With the combination of proposed program with new ideas from all stakeholder, these new plan will be use as a guidance. The workshop ended with a photosession with all the stakeholders. The outcome of these three days retreat has inspired Sungai Bunus stakeholders to act for the river.
