19th November 2016: Project ‘Inspirasiku, Destinasiku’ (ID) is one of the ongoing projects under Teach for Malaysia and EcoKnights was honored to be invited to give a talk about upcycling.
EcoKnights representatives, Emirul Redzuan, Syamim Asri and Sanjeva Elil were sent to one of TFM’s school in Klang, named SMK Pandamaran Jaya to assist these kids with their upcycling project. TFM had started their program in this school since 2012. One of the TFM fellow, Kelvin Tan has been giving these children an opportunity to reach their full potential. Running for the 4th year, he’s looking upon to incorporate environmental sustainability element in their activities, and upcycling was one of the interesting thing that they’re looking forward to.
The talk started with Emirul giving a brief introduction about upcycling to about 20 students. He shows several examples that are made based on various recyclable materials. Later on, these students were sent to the workshop and divided into 6 groups with each covering different theme. These themes include furniture, decoration, toys, musical instrument, fashion, and gardening. During the workshop, these students started to build their invention assisted by TFM fellow and EcoKnights. They started building their invention by using egg tray, bottle plastic, coconut shell, broken mirror, and any usable materials that they can lay their hands on around the area.
After they’d finished building their invention, they were instructed to present it on the next day. On the next day, it’d themed as the Project ID Open Day. On this day, students will bring along their parents to the program to show what they did during the whole program.
