Sept 5-7, 2016, Ipoh, Perak – EcoKnights, together with the Institute Darul Ridzuan (IDR) and the Perak State EXCO on Tourism and ICT, collaborated in this year’s Pangkor International Development Dialogue (PIDD) to host a satellite event called “Sustainable Tourism in Perak”.
Close to 80 PIDD participants attended this satellite where two speakers, Shane Dallas (Australia) and Adeline Khoo (Adeline’s Villa), and moderated by EcoKnights president, Yasmin Rasyid.
Shane Dallas is a Dubai based professional travel blogger and public speaker who has been blogging for more than a decade as “The Travel Camel”. He is very active on Social Media and is a founder of #TRLT (“The Road Less Travelled”) Twitter chat, one of the world's most popular and successful Twitter travel chats. Shane is a highly skilled public speaker with 25 years of experience in delivering presentations across five continents and is in demand as a speaker within the travel, Social Media and cruise ship communities.
Meanwhile, the other speaker was Adeline Khoo, founder and owner of Adeline Villa in Gopeng. Started as a small enterprise, she converted a pristine area in to a resort where all her employees are from the local community including the indigenous community. Adeline exemplifies a home grown effort in tourism in the state of Perak and she serves as an inspiration to many locals on the approaches to tourism where inclusivity is exemplified.
The session lasted for close to three hours and took the format of a talk show where the moderator, Yasmin, interviews the speakers to engage them to share their perspectives and experiences, local and globally, in the tourism sector.
Many concerns on the integration of state government policies on tourism were raised, including concerns on tourist education on the state’s efforts in nature-based tourism, and also in the effective management of tourist spots in terms of waste management, environmental protection and participation of local communities.
The participants were really engaged on the topic and many of the participants were active in asking questions and seeking clarification on the issues discussed at the session.
EcoKnights would like to thank IDR and the Perak State Exco on Environment and ICT for this collaboration and look forward to future efforts to build knowledge and inspire Perakians to walk the talk in sustainability.
ABOUT THE DIALOGUE
Pangkor’s history has a strategic place in the starting point of our country. The treaty that was signed between the British and Sultan of Perak. The treaty is significant in the Malay states history because it signalled the British official involvement in the Malay states’ policies.
