April 18, 2014, Kuala Lumpur - EcoKnights together with twenty (20) other partners of the River of Life Public Outreach Programme (ROL-POP) organized the SUKA (Sungai Untuk Kegunaan Anda) Community Outreach program at Taman Sungai Bunus today.
The ROL-POP initiative initiative is part of the 12B of the "River Cleaning” component of the River of Life.
ROL-POP’s goal is to promote stakeholder partnerships and river preservation among the target groups to reduce water pollution in the Klang River.
Phase 2 of the ROL-POP covers the Sg Bunus Basin and is a people-centric non-structural initiative, to educate and inform the relevant target groups on river care and preservation, in order to minimise river pollution and hence to improve the river water quality.
The SUKA Sungai Bunus program was organized by the local partners and communities and was a community program aimed at :
- Educating the public on the common need to care for the river and its river water quality, such as the do’s and don’ts as well as other skills to preserve the river.
- Promoting a sense of ownership towards the river system.
- Initiating a long-term and sustainable change in behaviour towards preserving the river.
The program today was graced by the mayor of DBKL, Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib and was attended by close to 500 community members from school children to residents of nearby housing areas, not forgetting volunteers from IM4U, Sekolah Vokasional Setapak and more.
Among some of the activities lined up included a drawing and coloring contest for youths and children, Zumba exercises, demonstration of candle making from used cooking oil and also tree planting efforts by the LA21 partners.
