After an intensive two weeks of reviewing all the submissions to the Anugerah Hijau 2011 competition, the judges and mentors, Lara Ariffin and Silas Liew, have finally selected the top ten best green proposals for each category (Totally Active and Wildly Creative).
The Anugerah Hijau selection and judging committee received a total of 32 submissions for the Totally Active category and 126 submissions for the Wildly Creative category, the highest number of submissions in total for this three year old youth-based competition.
Anugerah Hijau is an environment-themed competition for youths which focuses on using creativity and innovative approaches in addressing environmental issues. The competition is open to youths in Peninsular Malaysia between the ages of 14 and 25.
There are two competitive categories – the Totally Active category involves making a short video on an environmental issue while the Wildly Creative category involves creating a sustainably designed fashion wear.
For the Totally Active category, youths from all over Malaysia are invited to record and edit a short video of 1 to 3 minutes, approaching one environmental issue that worries them and proposing solutions for it. Alternatively the video could also be about an inspiring green activist, or an endangered species.
For the Wildly Creative category, youths are invited to submit their eco-friendly fashion designs, ensuring that 70% of the materials used are used or recycled, and eventually transforming their sketches in to a proper clothing item. Whether it’s the future of school uniforms, or perhaps a Hip-Hop fashion statement, the idea is to create and make fashion wears that are fashionable and stylish yet low-impact in terms of the materials use
As finalists, the participants are required to attend a full day fully sponsored workshop, scheduled for July 8th (Friday) at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC). The workshop is held, in conjunction with the Shell Eco Marathon Race (July 6th-9th), where the participants, will get a chance to catch a glimpse of the race, mingle with the race drivers and also, a tour of the paddock and pit areas.
A once in a lifetime experience, the workshop will not only exposed the finalists to the race track experience, the participants are privileged to have Lara Ariffin and Harun Rahman, two of Malaysia’s documentary film makers, and Silas Liew, MIFA 2010’s Most Promising Designer, enrich their green proposals.
The workshop is designed to further beef up the finalists’ proposals, whether for a short film/video or a sustainable fashion wear, and to also function as a platform to develop and improve their current capacities and skills in their respective competitive categories.
As an annual flagship educational programme organized by EcoKnights, a non-profit environmental organization, Anugerah Hijau aims to cultivate innovative and creative talents among youths to channel their energy towards addressing environmental issues and concerns.
Finalists have been notified via email and will be expected to confirm their workshop attendance with EcoKnights before June 30th 2011.
