Calling all young green heroes

June 5th 2011, News Straits Times -- IN conjunction with today's World Environment Day celebrations, the Anugerah Hijau crew, together with EcoKnights, are calling out to all young green heroes to join them in a 12-day celebration at the main concourse area of the Tropicana City Mall in Petaling Jaya from June 1 to 12.

Whether you are a wildlife or film lover, an activist or a newbie to this recent phenomenon called "going green", the Green Heroes Unite campaign will surely have an element that could set you straight on the path of sustainable living.

Green Heroes Unite, a collaboration between Anugerah Hijau and MyPartners Communications, is a campaign that aims to inculcate more practical solutions to daily environmental challenges through the showcase of a plethora of local green initiatives, products and services as well as educational and entertaining workshops and talks on the environment.

Past and present Anugerah Hijau participants like SMK Temerloh Jaya from Pahang and SMK (P) Sri Aman from Selangor, will also be taking part in this event. They will be showcasing their creative talents in the form of an eco-friendly band and recycled art display.

Anugerah Hijau is an annual competition organised by a local non-profit environmental organisation, EcoKnights. This competition, in its third year, aims to unearth the hidden talents in today's young adults and challenge their capabilities in competing in a specific themed competition for the best green project.

For this year's competition, participants were encouraged to submit their green ideas for one of two categories -- Totally Active and Wildly Creative.

In the former category, the best 10 green proposals for a green short video/film will be selected by local renowned documentary filmmaker Lara Ariffin. As for the Wildly Creative category, top local fashion designer Silas Liew will choose the best 10 eco-friendly (attires must be made from at least 70 per cent of recycled, unused/unwanted and easily available) designs and convert them to runway and wearable fashion attire.

To highlight some amazing young green heroes and their efforts in Malaysia, Anugerah Hijau will showcase some of the inspiring and creative uses of recycled materials and aim to inspire young Malaysians to take a sustainable approach in their daily consumption patterns.

Catch giant size reptiles, bugs and slugs like caterpillars, praying mantis, ladybugs and a king cobra creeping and crawling among the exhibition displays at Green Heroes Unite.

What's so special about them? They are all given a new and "bigger" role in life as these giant size creepy crawlies are made from recycled materials.

Owing it all to mentor Ong Kim Hor, a retired schoolteacher, SMK Temerloh Jaya's students have taken a whole new perspective on recyclable junk.

Doing the same is the Eco Music Band from SMK (P) Sri Aman. Inspired by singing about the urgency of environmental protection and the need to reduce solid waste disposal, this all-girl band drummed their way into the hearts of the audience.

Join the Green Heroes Unite celebration and be inspired to be a green hero today for a healthier planet.

The giant bugs will be on display throughout the 12-day event, while the Eco Music Band will perform on June 12 at 7.30pm. Other green performances include the Cheng Loi tribal dance led by Raman Bah Tuin (June 4, 7pm), the pumping KL Stompers (June 5, 7pm) and the Eco Drum Circle (June 11, 7pm).
